I had an explanation for this before, but the internet ate it, so I'm doing it again. I'll forego the humourous little anecdote on how I came to the conclusion that a Valkyrie should be the illustration for Frey and say that Frey's connection with Freyja and the likelihood of his followers being primarily female spurred the base of the picture. Esoterically, Yngwaz is the Rune of masculinity, the phallic Rune, and since the Valkyrie is the best embodiment of war to the heathen profile, and that war has been the arena of males, it seemed somehow logical to do it this way.
